  • Overview

    This position is responsible for planning, coordinating, and directing all activities, projects, and personnel within the Mechanical Engineering Discipline. This position will serve as the direct report for leaders of various sections within Mechanical Engineering, such as: Commissioning, Fire Protection, HVAC, Plumbing, and Refrigeration. This position will act as a liaison both internally and externally for Mechanical Engineering services by interacting with Market Sector Leaders, Project Managers, LEO A DALY personnel at Atlanta and other corporate offices, clientele, consultants and vendors.


    • Determine personnel needs for the entire Mechanical Engineering discipline and individual projects based upon the current and projected workload; collect information and feedback from discipline managers including staffing recommendations and workload projections
    • Convey personnel needs to the Director of Engineering, Director of Operations and Human Resources and participate in the recruitment, interviewing and selection of prospective candidates for Senior, Professional and Technical level positions
    • Review the performance and work quality of discipline personnel and conduct evaluations on a regular basis including formal annual and mid-year reviews; provide recognition for outstanding contributions and constructive criticism for areas of improvement
    • Review all Mechanical Engineering deliverables for technical content, drawing quality and adherence to code/project requirements and project program 
    • Administer salaried and hourly compensation for discipline personnel; provide recommendations on salary increases and approve personnel promotions and transfers
    • Act a mentor for discipline personnel by providing continuous assistance and support through professional training and career development
    • Participate and lead discipline meetings and design reviews with mechanical personnel
    • Discuss discipline and project objectives, requirements and budgets with clientele, Mechanical staff, Director of Engineering and Director of Operations
    • Establish design standards and procedures and manage the work of Mechanical staff and project teams by assisting in the review of quality assurance and quality control evaluations
    • Perform research and review trade publications and literature to stay abreast of developments within the field of Mechanical Engineering; attend where appropriate local, state, and national seminars, conventions and summits; collaborate with Mechanical staff, Project Managers and Market Sector Leaders to improve or develop new engineering methods to improve efficiency, technique, quality and dependability
    • Provide oversight and assistance with writing and editing of mechanical specifications and equipment selection for mechanical systems and devices
    • Personally conduct or delegate job-site inspections to ensure projects are adhering to specifications and design intent
    • Participate in reviews with various governing agencies for code compliance in relation to zoning laws, fire regulations, building codes and other ordinances; convey applicable changes of local, state, and federal regulations and ordinances to discipline appropriate personnel
    • Perform other duties as assigned or instructed


     • Ability to communicate effectively and tactfully with discipline personnel, office staff, and clientele
    • Demonstrated ability to promote and establish teamwork and individual leadership within the discipline
    • Ability to successfully and continuously lead a team of engineering professionals to meet and exceed project, discipline, and business unit goals
    • Extensive knowledge of building codes
    • Thorough working knowledge of Microsoft Office Applications and mechanical design software
    • Effective time management and organizational skills; ability to become involved in a number of projects and remain up-to-date on the various developmental stages
    • Well developed analytical and problem-solving skills
    • Knowledge of capabilities of AutoCAD, Revit, and other production software   
    Education and License Requirements:
    • Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university in Mechanical; Master’s Degree or other advanced education is preferred
    • Professional Registration as a Mechanical Engineer (Georgia registration preferred)
    • 15 years minimum experience in Mechanical Engineering encompassing the design of buildings
    • 5-10 years of progressive management experience
    • Current affiliation and/or membership with local, state or national industry organizations
