  • Overview

    This position is responsible for assisting Fire Protection Engineers and Designers in all phases of project development from pre-design to construction close-out.  This position will serve as a junior-level designer for a variety of mechanical systems, such as: Fire Suppression, Alarms Systems, Life Safety, Egress, etc. This position will work directly with a team of Fire Protection Engineers and collaborate with Architects, Civil, Structural and MEP Engineers to ensure drawings are designed in accordance with established standards, and to generate solutions for any technical problems that arise.

    Responsibilities

    • Assist Fire Protection Engineers and Senior Designers with drawing preparation and system design including fire protection calculations (i.e., system demand, pump sizing, occupancy load, egress, smoke control, etc.), technical comparisons and similar technical work
    • Stay knowledgeable of the current National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) standards including the Life Safety Code (101) and national building and fire codes (Uniform, International, etc.)
    • Provide a basic knowledge of fire/smoke detection and alarm systems, including incipient stage smoke detection and alarm systems.
    • Possess basic design competency in wet pipe, dry pipe, and pre-action automatic fire sprinkler suppression systems, as well as clean agent total flooding suppression systems (FM200, FE25, Inergen, NOVEC, etc.) and fire alarm/mass notification systems
    • Assist in the design and detail of fire protection systems
    • Participate in team coordination meetings and reviews with Project Design Team and various governing agencies at the city, state and federal levels to ensure code compliance
    • Perform other duties as assigned or instructed

    Qualifications

     

    • Ability to communicate effectively and tactfully with department personnel, internal office staff, and clientele
    • Basic knowledge and understanding of building concepts and design codes
    • Current knowledge of industry design and drafting standards
    • Effective time management and organizational skills; ability to become involved in fire protection work on multiple projects simultaneously while managing daily activities
    • Well developed analytical and problem-solving skills
    • Experienced in the use of Revit, AutoCAD and other design software
    • Thorough working knowledge of Microsoft Office applications; Word, Excel, Outlook and ancillary software such as Bluebeam.
    • Associate’s Degree in Engineering Drafting or similar field from an accredited Technical College or University
    • 5 - 5 years of experience in the field of mechanical, fire protection or related systems engineering and design while working under the supervision of Project Engineers and Designers within the A&E industry
